When planning to set up a membership, there are a few important things we need to carefully think through, followed by specific steps to ensure it's implemented effectively.
The first and most important step is to clearly define what we want our membership to achieve. What is the core purpose or value it should offer?
Once we have a solid understanding of the goal and structure of the membership, we can then begin to explore how best to build and implement it in a way that aligns with that vision.
Now that we have a clearer idea of what we’re planning to set up, membership models typically fall into three main categories:
1.1 Discount-Based Membership
This is the simplest model.
Customers pay for a membership that entitles them to a discount on bookings or services. The key value here is ongoing savings.
Examples:
Membership offer x amount of discount
1.2 All-Inclusive Access
In this model, members pay a higher monthly or annual fee, but in return, they receive unlimited access to certain options or features at no additional cost. This works well when you want to offer convenience and predictability in pricing.
Examples:
- Membership adds them a whole new free option that members can use free of charge (you are able to combine some of the membership options together adding restrictions to these as well such as:
- members can have longer opening hours, they can book longer or earlier)
1.3 Limited Free Usage + Add-ons
With this structure, members are given a set number of free bookings or sessions within a certain time frame (e.g., per week or per month).
After using their allowance, they can either:
-
Receive a discounted rate for additional usage, or
-
Pay the standard rate for anything beyond the limit.
Examples:
Member receive 8 hours free per month requires max calendar period venue restriction
Member receive 5 hours per week plus they can book earlier further in advance than non-members requires max calendar period venue restriction + min book ahead venue restriction
Free member option 6 times a month + 20% on normal additional booking options requires max calendar period venue restriction + discount perk
This model balances value and usage control, encouraging regular engagement while still generating revenue from high-usage members.
💡 Tip: Create a "Test Membership"
As a helpful tip, create a membership called “Test” with a free pricing option. The main purpose of this test membership is to allow you to experiment with different perks and settings. This way, you can check whether the membership setup behaves as expected—without needing to go through the full billing or live user flow. It’s a safe and effective way to validate your configuration before launching it to customers.
Now, let’s look at how to set up each membership type in bullet points, with links included for each step. This way, we can clearly see what needs to be set up and in what order. While it’s possible to complete the setup in a different sequence, following a consistent order will make the process easier to remember and help avoid confusion. It also allows us to refer back to the same structure when needed, making learning and troubleshooting much simpler.
1.1 Discount-Based Membership — Setup Steps
📌 Following these steps in order helps ensure consistency and reduces confusion when reviewing or troubleshooting later. Where possible, links or references to each setup section should be provided in your platform for easy navigation.
